Supporting Displaced Children in Ukraine and Across the Globe

News

Lives uprooted. Communities ruptured. Cities torn apart. The harsh reality of everyday life for children affected by war.

Comic Relief and the Red Nose Day campaign have a long-standing history of delivering crucial funds to partner organizations working across the globe to help children affected by conflict and war. Our Rapid Response Grants have provided critical humanitarian relief in emergencies ranging from hurricanes in the United States to refugee crises in Syria, Ethiopia, Myanmar, and many other areas of conflict. Today, in addition to these efforts, we must take action on behalf of the millions of children impacted by the devastating war in Ukraine.

Through our Rapid Response efforts, we know firsthand that the consequence of living under occupation or in conflict zones is simply unfathomable. Children are displaced from their homes, separated from loved ones, forced out of classrooms, and exposed to the constant threat of violence. Their innocent childhood is morphed into a daily struggle for just the basic necessities: a safe place to sleep, food and water for nourishment, and vital healthcare.

Red Nose Day’s Rapid Response grants help to provide these urgently needed, life-saving resources during and after a humanitarian crisis. Our agile funding and grant process enables us to be responsive to the needs of our grantee partners - in Ukraine and across the globe - who are working on the frontlines, and in the communities they serve.

Rapid response grants to organizations providing aid in Ukraine are not the first or the last time we will quickly mobilize on behalf of children in crisis. Because the reality is: conflict permeates every facet of a child's life. It imposes lasting social costs on future generations, perpetuating systemic issues like poverty and inequality.

Recently, UNICEF declared that one-half of all children in Ukraine are now displaced1.

That’s 4.3 million children.

This number continues to rise with each passing day, calling for immediate humanitarian relief. These children are frightened and confused. They’re in desperate need of shelter and safety. They’re vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and human trafficking.

The path forward won’t be an easy one, but solidarity as one global community is the first step in putting the pieces back together. The ripple effects of crisis are far-reaching and don’t simply end when the bombing ceases. To ensure all children are safe, healthy, educated, and empowered in the U.S. and around the world, it’s essential to provide life-saving services in both the immediate and in the long term.

As a collective group of friends, supporters, and caring people, we must speak loud and clear against all violence towards children…everywhere. Issues like global child poverty and displacement can often feel too massive and overwhelming to address. It’s easy to think: I’m just one person, how can I possibly make a difference? But, we don’t have to tackle it alone. It’s our collective efforts and attention that can help bring about positive change.

With the launch of our 2022 Red Nose Day campaign just around the corner, this crisis is a reminder of the importance of creating a healthy future for all children. But a sustainable, equitable future simply cannot happen if children are robbed of crucial resources like food, safety, education, and their individual voices.

Together, we have the power to change this trajectory. To help children dream without limits and lead meaningful lives.
